Jazz is at the heart of American culture. Its distinctive swing in notes, call-and-response singing, and improvisations are as old as the country itself. In the 20th century, it was subject to the fast evolution of music. Different trends and styles came and went. Swing, Bebop, Hard Bop, Jazz Fusion, Free Jazz, and many more sprouted from this genre. At the same time, as the music genre evolved and expanded, so did the names that became its pillars. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and Herbie Hancock, to name a few, are among the icons of Jazz.

In today's music scene, jazz has undeniably lost some of its bright sparkle that it had in the early 20th century. However, there are efforts to preserve the culture and relevance of the music genre. Among these efforts is the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival, a yearly event wherein many jazz musicians and fans come together.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association will lead this year's jazz festival. They have chosen an incredible lineup with Jodeci, Kamasi Washington, and Robert Glasper as the main artists. Special appearances of Yebba, Christian McBride, Cory Henry, Charles Lloyd, Baby Rose, The Soul Rebels with Seun Kuti, Mulatu Astatke, Brian Blade & The Fellowship Band, Alex Isley, Aneesa Strings, Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Performance Ensemble at UCLA and other surprise guests will be expected.

The R&B iconic group Jodeci is known for their tinkering with ballads. "Come and Talk to Me" and "My Heart Belongs To U" are their most popular jazz songs. Apart from these, they became 90s royalty with records like "Cry for You," "Freek'n You," and "Get On Up."

A legendary saxophonist, Kamasi Washington is responsible for the jazzy tone of Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly. His albums "Heaven and Earth," (2018), "The Epic," (2015), "The Proclamation" (2007), and "Live at 5th Street Dick's" (2005) are all considered among the bests of contemporary jazz. He was nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media in the 2021 Grammy Awards for the Michelle Obama documentary Becoming.

Another jazz royalty, Robert Glasper is among the best jazz pianists of this century. He bagged five Grammy Awards for his skill on the keys. "Black Radio" started his Grammy streak in 2013. In 2015, he won Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Jesus Children of America." Other wins include Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media for Miles Ahead in 2017, Best R&B Song for "Better Than I Imagined" with H.E.R. and Meshell Ndegeocello in 2021, and Best R&B Album for "Black Radio III" in 2023.

Experience the best of today's jazz scene at the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival. If you are a fan of jazz, the Hollywood Bowl will be the best place to be in this coming June 16.
