The Sound of Music is a 1965 American musical film depicting the real-life story of Maria Augusta Kutschera, a young Austrian nun who becomes the governess of the children of a widowed naval officer. She teaches them music and discipline, and the family eventually learns to accept her as a new member. The film stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and is the most successful film of all time. The movie is based on the 1959 stage musical of the same name by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which included the songs "Do-Re-Mi", "My Favorite Things", "Edelweiss" and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" and many more. The movie would go on to win five Academy Awards, including Best Picture in 1966, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. The movie was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2001 and ranks as one of the top 100 films of all time when adjusted for inflation. The 60th anniversary soundtrack was released in 2025. The film musical was shot on location in Salzburg, Austria. We highly recommend the film version with lyrics.
